Final Day of Big Rock Underway

Widespread rain and strong winds have not made for the prettiest day out on the water as the final day of The Big Rock gets under way. Gusts up to 27 knots have already been reported this morning in the vicinity of Cape Lookout. A stalled front has settled over the ocean where most of today’s participants will be trolling for the big one.

With yesterday’s weigh in of a 495.2 pound Marlin, Sneads Ferry boat Pelagic Hunter II, leads by a pound and looks to bring home about $225,000. In second place, Predator, out of Hatteras with a 494 Blue Marlin, looks to take well over 1 Million Dollars. Due to the Tournaments’ many levels, the Predator boat stands to win more money even with a smaller fish, because they entered all the various levels or “Tournaments within a Tournament”, a familiar phrase to many who fish these events.

Action ends today at 2 pm, when all lines must be out of the water. Fisher’s will still have the rest of the afternoon to get their catch in and to the docks if hooked up at that time. Expect a “reel” shootout as there is plenty room for bigger fish on the leader board with some of the more specialist categories still up for grabs.

If you are near the coast all the action can be heard as it happens on Marine Radio Channel 71.
